Aquaponics (IPA: /ˈækwəˈpɒnɪks/) is a self-watering closed-loop system that uses fish effluent and plants in a complementing recirculating enviroment to grow vegetables at an accelerated rate. Here you will find out about different systems you can build, it can be as small as a 10 gallon tank or a large scale commercial setup!

Black Soldier FlY Larvae

Aloha
Recently I have been having very good luck growing BSF larvae.  A friend gave me some she had come to her worm composting.  i have been making different systems to find the easiest way to collect them.  I know that you can buy systems but I am into using what I have around.  My first WWOOFer had built a bucket system but she never could attract a BSF.  I am now using those buckets with great success. I have also tried some other things oI found on line.  They all seem to work.  My present WWOOFer just built a new type system.  I need to paint it and get it on line.  I now have an unending source of veggie and fruit scraps delivered every week.  I will try to get some pictures up soon.

I had a friend who had their worm bin infested with BSFs and had to start the worm bin from scratch. I took her BSFs and tried to raise them, but I was unsuccessful.
Anyways I fed the BSFs to my breeding fish but I couldn't get myself to feed the BSFs to the fish we plan on eating. I know the fish would process the BSFs out of their system, but I couldn't do it.
It may sound silly, it is what it is. ;D

If you ever plan to be self sustaining you had better learn to eat fish that eat BSF larvae.  Do you really know what they put in your fish food.  Let me assure you you wouldn't let your fish eat it if you did.  Have you ever ate a fish you caught from a stream or a lake.  What do you think they eat.  BSF larvae are good for chickens also.  People feed compost worms to their fidh What is the difference?

My brother was doing BSF larvae but the tube in a bucket was an ineffective design. I just saw a new design with vinyl fencing. each section of fence is about 8" wide and has little slots about 1/4" running up the center. Just lay these down in any bin and the BSF wil use them. The woman who owns the farm said that she has pictures of 8" of larvae all waiting to go up these ramps.

I'll be using BSF to feed to chickens and fish.

HEy all. I have been trying to attract some BSF to my bin for a few weeks to no avail. Before, they were all in  my worm bin (since we cleaned them out) and now that I need them they are nowhere to be found. Does anyone on Oahu have a working BSF bin or a populous colony that would be willing to share and help me start up my own? We could figure out where to meet up and stuff, I just want my bin to be full.
Current Build:

I tried raising BSF to feed to my fish. I have had some success, but to my dismay my fish refused to eat them!! I have been feeding them pellet food from the onset. I've had better success feeding them duck weed.
Any suggestions?
Two 1/2 50 gal GB
300 gal tank
Flush barrel
Green onions, garlic chive, long egg plant, strawberries, tomato

Did you ever find out what these were? to me, they look more like some sort of caterpillar (moth? perhaps?) or cutworms than BSFL.

The only commercial ones I've see were the biopod:

I've seen some on youtube that people built out of wood or a 5 gal bucket.

I saw a pretty great BSF collector at Happyponics in waianae but I can't remember the design- it was a wooden box which funneled the larvae into a collection area.  It impressed me a lot and I hope to imitate it someday.

I feed my fish the caters that attack my kale but they don't like to eat when I am watching them.  :) dunno if they eat em or not!
