Aloha all,

So I'm sitting here in my living room and there are at least 3 mosquitoes trying to suck the life out of me.  I live near alamoana and there aren't too many open water sources for these mosquitoes to breed, and there definitely aren't any pools or puddles in my yard.  I really have no clue where they are coming from.  What I do know is that they love to hang out outside in the shelter of my shoe rack and amongst my recycle bins.  There are at least 20 of them flying around every time I grab my shoes!

So I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions on how to get rid of these bastards.  I tried making traps out of soda bottles but I only catch fruit flies!

Do you guys think that making a lotus flower pond/pot with mosquito fish will help?  Maybe it'll attract the mosquitoes and help put a dent in the population?

I'M SO ITCHY!!!

i am thinking about buying a bug zapper, those things only seem to last a year.  not sure if itll work on mosquitoes tho.
you could try a lamp over a bowl a water but i think that only works on termites.

What about planting some Citronella, Lemon Grass, Catnip?

Local fishermen might recommend that you stuff the shoes in your shoe rack with used fabric softener sheets....that might "hopefully" ward off the mosquitoes and will at least make your shoes smell nice and fresh  Wink

There is the Mosquito plant, I know I've seen it at walmart and home depot... we had these plants in our yard and it seems to work fine...

But none of these are ways to reduce the populations. Anyone know the roaming range of these things?  I figure the water source must be somewhere close.

Could be right in your neighbors yard. Alot of times I've seen one old tire that had hundreds of mosquito larvae and adults swarming around it. Could be something as simple as that or someone with tall uncut grass or weeds. Time to start looking over fences. Don't get caught though.

found this here:  http://www.mosquitoes.org/LifeCycle.html

The flight habits of mosquitoes depend again on the species with which we are dealing. Most domestic species remain fairly close to their point of origin while some species known for their migration habits are often an annoyance far from their breeding place. The flight range for females is usually longer than that of males. Many times wind is a factor in the dispersal or migration of mosquitoes. Most mosquitoes stay within a mile or two of their source. However, some have been recorded as far as 75 miles from their breeding source.

A mile from their source? Doesn't sound good for RyanH. With the ala wai around there and all the canals draining into it if they can come from a mile away or more I don't see a way to stop that.

There are propane systems that simulate bodyheat to attract mosquitoes and them suck them in/trap them. I have no experience I just remember reading about them somewhere.

Its called the mosquito magnet.  I used to have one.  They work pretty well but something broke on mine and I never got around to fixing it.

www.mosquitomagnet.com/

You could use the caught mosquitoes for fish food.

I also had a mosquito magnet until it died on me.  They work.  Four or five years ago when we had the 40 days of rain and the propane shortage at the same time, my MM sat idle.  When we got the propane again, I caught about 3 cups worth of mosquitos - probably in the 10's of thousands (they dry up in the MM and reduce to the size of a pinhead). Anyway, they work but are expensive. You have to fill the tank about every 3 weeks - at the cost of over $20 now.
