Aquaponics (IPA: /ˈękwəˈpɒnɪks/) is a self-watering closed-loop system that uses fish effluent and plants in a complementing recirculating enviroment to grow vegetables at an accelerated rate. Here you will find out about different systems you can build, it can be as small as a 10 gallon tank or a large scale commercial setup!

Okay, granted this might sound like a non-issue, but here in Mililani where it's exceptionally quiet at night and houses are really close....sound does make a difference.  So I'm trying to find the best way to have water drain from my DWC down into my fishtank as quiet as possible, but still manage to create a decent amount of aeration. (200GPH pump to 2 DWC 18 gallons each, draining 1 ft down to fishtank)

I've tried Lucero's single slit waterfall, but there's not enough pressure from the passive flow to make a nice waterfall.  Tried almost everything I can think of and so far a sprinkler bar sitting just above the water level seems to be the quietest.  Any ideas?

someone had built a muffler type thing, the return pipe went straight down into a larger pipe which was submerged in the water.  this might help muffle the water and still help aerate.
personally i like the sound of the water.

I tried the submerged method and you just end up with a big air bubble explosion in the beginning of the siphon. After that it is quiet though.

With the sprinkler (drilled holes) you get a little more of a stream/rain effect. I used to have this on my systems but after I made the single slit it was so much quieter I just use it on everything now. Sorry it didn't work out for you.

what if you drilled a very small hole in the muffler/silencer to allow water to exit - no explosion right?

Lucero - Do you have any of your single-slits running off of a continuous flow return or are they all running off of siphons.  I was able to get it to work with high pressure flow from my siphon, but with just passive continuous flow from my DWC there wasn't enough pressure for water to run along the entire slit.  I tried to create a shorter slit to increase water pressure, but then my DWC overflowed because of too much back-pressure.  Also tried thin slits vs thick slits with no such luck...thank goodness PVC is cheap, because I sure went through a bunch of them experimenting.

Hooked, I don't know if this will help your case but its worked for me.  My house is quite too and I did this and it helped.  I also stopped running my pumps at night since I have an air pump.

Use a T-fitting at the end of your drain pipe.  One end pointing to the sky and the other with a pipe that runs underwater.  When the water drains it pulls in water from the open end of the T and forces bubbles into the water and very little noise.  It's better when there's a stronger flow but you can play with it, might help...

Haven't used it on a continuous flow. Just timed and autosiphon systems.

Lucero - Funny, I've been trying to figure out a way to deal with that big loud air bubble explosion at the start of the auto-siphon too!  As for the single slit, I sure wish there was a way to make it work with low pressure continuous flow...I really like the way it looks and really wanted to utilize it on water returning from my DWC  Sad

gkaneko - Thanks, you're right, the T-fitting with the end buried under the water seems make the least amount of noise while still aerating the water.  Almost works like a venturi, but not.
